GPA Calculator

Semester GPA from your subjects, credits and grades, with an optional cumulative GPA.

How it works

Pick a grading scale, then enter the credits and grade for each subject. Add or remove rows as needed. Turn on the cumulative option to combine the semester with your earlier GPA and credits.

Quality points = grade points × credits Semester GPA = Σ quality points ÷ Σ credits Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + semester quality points) ÷ (previous credits + semester credits)

Example

Mathematics A (4.0) with 4 credits, Physics B+ (3.3) with 3, Chemistry A− (3.7) with 3 and English B (3.0) with 2 give 16 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 6 = 43 quality points over 12 credits, so a GPA of 43 ÷ 12 = 3.58.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging the grades without weighting by credits. A 4-credit subject counts more than a 1-credit one.
  • Leaving a grade blank and expecting it to count as zero. Blank subjects are skipped; enter an F (0) if the subject should pull the average down.
  • Using the wrong scale. If your school gives A+ more than 4.0 or uses different points, edit the grade points for those rows.

About this calculator

Add a row for each subject with its credits and grade. Choosing a letter grade fills in the grade points for the scale you selected, and you can overwrite the points directly if your school uses different values. The semester GPA is the credit-weighted average: total quality points (grade points × credits) divided by total credits.

Subjects with credits but no grade yet are left out of the average and flagged, so you can see a GPA for the grades you have so far. The grading scales are common examples, not official conversions; letter grades and their points vary between schools. Nothing you type here leaves the page or goes into the link.

Frequently asked questions

How is semester GPA calculated?

Multiply each subject's grade points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. With 43 quality points over 12 credits, the GPA is 43 ÷ 12 = 3.58.

How do I add this semester to my cumulative GPA?

Turn on the cumulative option and enter your previous GPA and credits completed. For a previous 3.2 over 60 credits and this semester's 43 quality points over 12 credits, the new cumulative GPA is (3.2 × 60 + 43) ÷ (60 + 12) = 235 ÷ 72 = 3.26.

Why was one of my subjects skipped?

A subject needs both credits above zero and a grade or grade points to be counted. Rows missing either are left out of the average and listed above the result so you can fix them.

Can I use a 10-point scale or my own grade points?

Yes. Choose the 10-point preset, or choose Custom and type the grade points for each subject. The grade points on every row stay editable, so a different school scale also works.
