Final Grade Calculator

Work out the score you need on the final exam to reach your target overall grade.

How it works

Fill in your current grade, the coursework and final exam weights, and your target. The result shows the final exam score you need, how many grade points each part contributes, and what a few sample final scores would give you overall.

Overall = (current × coursework weight + final × final weight) ÷ (coursework weight + final weight) Required = (target × (coursework weight + final weight) − current × coursework weight) ÷ final weight

Example

With a current grade of 78% worth 60%, a final worth 40% and a target of 85%, the required final score is (85 × 100 − 78 × 60) ÷ 40 = 3,820 ÷ 40 = 95.5%. Check: 78 × 0.6 + 95.5 × 0.4 = 46.8 + 38.2 = 85.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the grade for the whole course instead of the grade on the work counted so far.
  • Weights that do not match the syllabus. If the coursework is worth 70% and the final 30%, enter 70 and 30.
  • Reading 'not achievable' as a prediction. It only says the target cannot be reached under the weights and the 100% cap you entered.

About this calculator

Enter the grade you have earned so far, how much the coursework counts, how much the final exam counts, and the overall grade you want. The calculator solves for the final exam score that gives exactly that overall grade, and tells you whether it is achievable, already secured, or out of reach under the weighting you entered.

The two weights are treated as shares of their own total, so they do not need to add up to 100: weights of 3 and 2 behave exactly like 60 and 40. Grades are capped at 100%, so extra credit is not modelled, and the required score is rounded up to the next 0.01% so that scoring that figure reaches your target.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the score I need on my final exam?

Use required = (target × total weight − current grade × coursework weight) ÷ final exam weight. For a 78% current grade at 60% weight, a final worth 40% and a target of 85%, that is (8,500 − 4,680) ÷ 40 = 95.5%.

What if my weights don't add up to 100?

They are treated as shares of their own total, and the page tells you when that happens. Weights of 70 and 50 act like 58.33% and 41.67%, because the overall grade divides by 120 instead of 100.

What does 'not achievable' mean?

The score you would need is above 100%. Even a perfect final exam would leave you below your target under the entered weights, and the page shows the best overall grade you can still finish with.

What if I already have enough?

If the required score works out to zero or less, you reach the target even with 0% on the final, and the result shows 0%.
