Fuel Cost Calculator
Fuel needed and what a trip costs, from distance, mileage and fuel price.
How it works
Divide the distance by your mileage to get the fuel used, then multiply by the price of one litre or gallon. For a round trip the distance is counted twice. The cost per passenger is the trip cost divided by the number of people sharing it, driver included.
fuel = distance ÷ mileage
cost = fuel × price per litre (or gallon)
per passenger = cost ÷ passengersExample
250 km one way at 15 km/l needs 250 ÷ 15 = 16.67 litres. At an example price of ₹100 a litre that is ₹1,666.67. Tick round trip and the distance becomes 500 km, so the cost is ₹3,333.33. Shared by 4 people, that is ₹833.33 each.
Common mistakes
- Using the mileage printed in the brochure. Real-world mileage is usually lower, especially in city traffic or with a full load.
- Mixing units, such as miles with km/l. Pick the unit system first so the labels match what you enter.
- Forgetting the return leg. If you are coming back the same way, tick round trip.
About this calculator
Enter the distance, your vehicle's mileage and the fuel price, and the calculator gives the fuel the trip needs, the cost, and each passenger's share. Switch between metric (km, km/l, price per litre) and imperial (miles, mpg, price per gallon). The round-trip box counts the distance twice, and the result also shows the other direction so you can compare.
The fuel price is whatever you type. Calcade does not know real fuel prices, and the example price is only an example. The currency selector changes the symbol and nothing else. In imperial mode the US gallon (3.785 L) is used unless you pick the UK gallon (4.546 L), because the same car has a different mpg figure on each. Real trips also depend on traffic, load, speed and terrain, so treat the result as an estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Divide the distance by the vehicle's mileage to get the fuel needed, then multiply by the fuel price. For 250 km at 15 km/l and ₹100 a litre, that is 250 ÷ 15 × 100 = ₹1,666.67 one way.
Does this use today's fuel price?
No. It uses the price you type. Calcade has no fuel price data, and the pre-filled price is only an example, so enter what you actually pay.
Why can I choose between a US and a UK gallon?
They are different sizes: a US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK gallon is 4.546 litres, so the same car gets a higher mpg figure in UK gallons. The gallon choice sets the litre figure shown beside the gallons; the gallons and the cost come straight from your mpg and price.
How do I convert mpg to km/l?
Multiply US mpg by about 0.425, or UK mpg by about 0.354. For example, 30 US mpg is about 12.8 km/l. You can also pick imperial units here and enter the mpg as it is.
What does the passenger count do?
It divides the trip cost equally. Count everyone sharing the cost, driver included. For an uneven split, use the Split Bill Calculator.
