Stock & Crypto Profit Calculator

Work out profit or loss, percentage return and break-even price for shares or coins.

How it works

Amount invested is the buy price times the quantity plus the buy fee. Proceeds are the sell price times the quantity, minus the sell fee. Profit is proceeds minus invested, and return is profit as a percentage of the amount invested. A percentage buy fee applies to the buy value and a percentage sell fee to the sale value.

Invested = buy price × quantity + buy fee Proceeds = sell price × quantity − sell fee Profit = Proceeds − Invested Return = Profit / Invested × 100

Example

25 shares bought at ₹1,000 and sold at ₹1,200, with a ₹20 fee on each side. Invested is ₹25,020 and net proceeds are ₹29,980, so the profit is ₹4,960, a return of 19.82%. The break-even sell price is ₹1,001.60.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring fees. On small trades, a flat fee on both sides can remove a large part of the gain.
  • Measuring the return against the buy price alone. Return here is measured on the amount invested, including the buy fee.
  • Forgetting tax. This result is before any tax on the gain.

Results are estimates and are for informational purposes only.

About this calculator

Enter the price you bought at, the price you sold at (or the current price), the quantity and any fees. Each fee can be a flat amount or a percentage. The calculator shows what you invested, what you received, the total fees, the profit or loss, the percentage return and the sell price you need just to break even.

Every price is typed by you: nothing is fetched and no price is live. Quantities can have up to 8 decimal places, which suits coins; for shares, use whole numbers unless your broker supports fractions. Taxes such as capital gains tax are not included, so the real after-tax result will be lower on a gain. The currency selector only changes how numbers are written.

Frequently asked questions

How is the percentage return calculated?

Profit divided by the amount invested, times 100. The amount invested includes the buy fee, so fees lower the return on both sides of the trade.

What is the break-even price?

The sell price per unit at which profit is exactly zero after both fees. With a flat sell fee it is (invested + fee) / quantity. With a percentage sell fee it is invested / (quantity × (1 − fee%)).

Does it show live prices?

No. It makes no network calls. You type the buy and sell prices, so you can use it for a past trade, a planned trade or the current price you are looking at elsewhere.

Are taxes included?

No. Capital gains tax and other taxes depend on where you live, how long you held the asset and the type of asset, so they are not calculated here.

How many decimals can the quantity have?

Up to 8, which covers fractions of a coin. For shares, a whole number is usual unless your broker supports fractional shares.
