How it works
Adding and subtracting fractions puts them over a common denominator first; multiplying runs across the top and bottom; dividing flips the second fraction and multiplies. Every step here stays in whole numbers and only reduces at the end, so 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 is exactly 1 rather than 0.9999999999999998 — which is what you get if you convert to decimals first.

Common mistakes
